Connecting to the Internet for Beginners
If you can read this page you probably don't need help, here it is anyway -
we use this page in our tutorials for beginners and lawyers
Internet Connection Basics - connect the phone line to the modem/computer
a phone jack is built in the back of the computer if you have an "internal" modem or if you have an "external" modem you will connect the modem to the computer and then the phone line to the modem, DSL is basically the same
ISP Dial-up/DSL Accounts - to surf the web and email you need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or on-line service account, there are lots of them and some are available for free
Dial-up and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) are the most common types of ISP accounts, DSL is faster - a 56 kbps (kilo-byte-per-second) modem cannot compete with a 1,200 kbps DSL download or 100+ kbps DSL upload speed available in many areas
Web Browsers & Surfing the Net - A browser is a program in your computer that allows you to view the Internet and world wide web by interpreting or reading all the bytes of information and sending them to your monitor as readable images, browsers also interact with web sites, play music, view videos and lots more.
The most common browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator

Email - to use email you need a connection to the Internet, as described above, an email account and web browser or email program on your computer
Email requires an email account with your ISP or an email service, there are lots of free email services and free email software comes in Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator web browsers - available for free download. Many free email services use only the web browser so you don't even need a separate email program. Configuring email accounts can be difficult at first - a real zen exercise.
